Born in Milan, 1957, Massimo Bollani has demonstrated his passion for art since childhood. On finishing school, despite his artistic inclination, his father enrols him at University (Polytechnic of Milan) to study Science and later, Engineering with the prospect of having a qualified son to inherit the family business. In his youth Massimo channelled his “aesthetic” and “expressive” Energies into various sports, which unconsciously became his main expressive outlet. After four reluctant University years and contrary to his father’s wishes, Massimo abandons his Studies in order to take up Art and Design. He attends the studio of the Milanese Painter and Sculptor, Pietro del Frate, then enrols at the Accademia di Brera (Brera Academy). During these Years he developed a solid classical education and in 1985 graduates in Painting. The attention to drawing and fine detail; study of the live object diligently developed at Brera is Further enhanced by direct contact with European and Non-European painting styles. His Journeys take him from London to Los Angeles, from New York City to St.Louis and Sydney. Bollani develops his research through close comparison to works by fellow overseas Artists. During these years abroad his work experiences include: teaching and collaborating with private Accademies and Painting Studies; and preparation of collective Art Exhibitions. In 1989 Bollani returns to Italy to continue his own painting path by participating in contests and Appearing in several collective and personal exhibitions. The continuous research of a shape And a mark that can be more and more incisive, strong and emotional, characterises his unique Path. Bollani thoroughly confronts one theme at a time, profoundly examining it in order to find The interpretation; thereby exhausting all avenues; concludes then starts all over again. This Approach guides him to seek in his work a greater synthesis and visual impact, availing him Inevitably to change and discovery both technical and expressive. In his 2004 solo exhibition “Verso Esterno” (To the Outside) he passes the borders of figuration, Venturing emotionally into the informal sphere. Once again, the Artist is attracted by the sign, Mark and saturated colour, working in broad and complex shapes, full of expressiveness. The latest stage of his research has brought him to combine the informal experience of painting and his passion for History and Archaeology. Combining traditional materials such as powdered Pigments, clays with modern substances like high-tech “resins”, he produces today a tridimensional effect that enhances sign and material, addressing Time, Man and their traces.
